Soft Broccoli Trees (Baby-Led Weaning, 6+ Months)

⏱ 15 min 🍽 Serves 2 📈 easy 🌍 British

Steamed broccoli florets with long stalks — nature's perfect handle for little hands learning to self-feed from 6 months. Cooked soft enough to squash between your fingers. Safety note: always supervise, sit baby upright in a highchair, and steam until genuinely soft — firm veg is a choking risk.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Cut the broccoli into large florets, keeping a good length of stalk on each one to act as a handle.
  2. Steam until very soft — the stalk should squash easily between your thumb and forefinger. Softer than you would cook it for adults.
  3. Cool to lukewarm and hand a floret to your baby stalk-first, or rest it on their tray and let them explore.

Chef's note: Suitable from 6 months. Gagging is normal while babies learn — choking is silent, so always stay within arm's reach and never lean baby back while eating. No salt, no sauces needed. Expect glorious mess: that is how babies learn to eat.
