Butternut Squash and Pear Puree (Baby Weaning, 6+ Months)
A velvety first puree pairing sweet roasted butternut squash with ripe pear, ideal from 6 months. Naturally sweet with no added sugar or salt, and easily loosened with your baby's usual milk. Safety note: always check the temperature before serving and never add honey for babies under 12 months.
Ingredients
- 400 g butternut squash, peeled and cubed
- 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and chopped
- 60 ml water or baby's usual milk
Method
- Peel the squash, scoop out the seeds and cut into 2 cm cubes.
- Steam the squash cubes over simmering water until completely tender when pierced with a fork.
- Add the chopped pear to the steamer for the final few minutes until soft.
- Blend the squash and pear until silky smooth, adding water or your baby's usual milk a splash at a time to reach the right consistency for their stage.
- Cool to lukewarm and test the temperature on the inside of your wrist before serving.
- Freeze leftovers in an ice cube tray, then transfer the cubes to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.
Chef's note: Suitable from 6 months. No added salt or sugar — babies' kidneys cannot handle salt, and NHS guidance says never give honey before 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. From around 7 months, blend less for a thicker, lumpier texture to help your baby learn to chew.
